View Collection. The book is full of surprises. We learn of Stephen F. Austin never married. We also learn about blue northers and that the use of that term is unique to Texas. He reports temperatures can drop more than 60 degrees in a hour period and cites examples of the Nueces River and Corpus Christi Bay freezing over.
Other surprises include the development of El Copano named for the Copane branch of the Karankawa Tribe as one of the main ports in the area in the 19th century. It served as an entry for Irish immigrants into South Texas. The Spanish mission in Refugio, established in , is described in detail, as are several historic houses in that city and elsewhere in the Coastal Bend.
